The US Course students had a meaningful and fruitful Day 2 of their Autumn Trip in Miyagi Prefecture.
For their morning activity, the students participated in their second program, which focused on the Okawa Elementary School Ruins. They listened to a presentation led by Mr. Tadano, a local resident who was a student at the school when the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami occurred. He shared his personal experiences and explained what happened at the school during the disaster.
During Mr. Tadano's presentation, the US Course students listened carefully and showed great attention and respect, especially as they heard about his experiences during such a difficult time.
After the presentation, the students visited the preserved ruins of Okawa Elementary School. The site has been preserved to teach future generations about the importance of disaster preparedness and evacuation. The class also visited an evacuation area connected to the events of the disaster and offered prayers for all those who lost their lives.

After visiting the Okawa Elementary School Ruins, the class went to a local center, where they had the opportunity to prepare and enjoy local food. While preparing the meal, the students listened to more stories from local residents who experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. The students enjoyed preparing the food together and, of course, enjoyed eating it as well!
After lunch, the students had some time to relax. They joined a local resident in singing some famous Japanese songs, and everyone had a great time.

In the afternoon, the class continued with their third program: making crafts for local residents. The students worked together to build shelves and helped one another throughout the activity. After completing their work, they wrote inspiring messages for the local community.
Throughout Day 2, the US Course students strengthened their bonds and grew together as a class. Through each activity, they learned important lessons about disaster preparedness, teamwork, cooperation, and supporting one another.
It was not only a day of learning, but also a meaningful opportunity for the students to understand the experiences of the people of Miyagi and the importance of remembering the lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
